Blue Hour by the lake as a swan is passing by

A snorkeler explores a mysterious blue hold below. There is a sense of something ominous waiting underneath which helps to draw the eye into the water swirls.

I first applied a thin layer of modeling paste for texture, followed by numerous layers of acrylic paint, pencil, and oil pastels. The layers were applied randomly at first, then strategically to give an ethereal impression around this single butterfly.

Blue Wire was an experiment in ICM photography designed to demonstrate the possibilities in image production by side lighting a single piece of plastic-coated wire with movement of the camera in a rotation motion during a long exposure. The result was an image that gives one a sense of falling into a world of blue hills and valleys

It's often the man you went to fetch water from the river who stirred up the leopard against you

A human form emerges and dissolves within a sea of luminous blue, as though woven from mist and memory. The figure is neither fully present nor absent, inviting contemplation of what remains when identity fades away.

Blue is a color that many people associate with calm and expansiveness. It reminds us of the sky and the sea, which often makes it feel clear, fresh, and soothing. In color psychology, blue is often linked to stability, focus, and security. At the same time, a very dark blue can also come across as thoughtful or serious. That's why blue is used in art, design, and everyday life in lots of ways: it can make spaces feel more relaxed, convey professionalism, or give a picture depth and distance.

This is an en plein air of the Grain Elevator in Old Downtown Bozeman, Montana. It now sits among modern society, but is a reminder of years past. I painted this during the Montana Plein Air 2026 Quick Draw Event.

Flame is the light and heat emitted by energy, and the ultimate cyan fire is a small universe of restrained energy. While constantly chasing light and heat, life blooms with bright energy and reflects the colorful and beautiful new world.

40x72" Please Release Me depicts a sailfish suspended beneath the ocean’s surface, its powerful form dissolving into liquid light. It’s a meditation on entanglement and impermanence, capturing the blurred threshold between control and surrender. I painted this from a reference photo by Greg Salsberg of a sailfish brought up alongside a boat, its body still in the water except for the tip of its tail breaking the surface. It had fought hard. Billfish often don’t survive the fight, even after release. That tension between survival and surrender became the undercurrent of the painting. The ocean here isn’t just a setting; it’s a collaborator. Light refracts and shatters. Water distorts and dissolves. The sail disintegrates into vibration, breaking apart into brush gestures, energy, and motion. Please Release Me might be a plea from the fish. Or the painter. Or maybe it’s an invitation to the viewer: loosen your hold on certainty. There’s a strange grace in that letting go.

Gathering at the Blue Hour' captures the serene atmosphere of Varanasi's Ghats as daylight fades. I've tried to capture the quiet gathering of boats on the Ganges, with soft twilight, shimmering reflections, and scattered lights creating a mood of tranquility and anticipation.

The serene Blue of the evening landscape evokes the dreaminess of the blue hour. When the work is done, the glass of wine is savoured as the evening draws in. This painting honors the long dead artisans who created hand cut crystal and those who grow wine in stony soil, both of these things born of the land which embraces us.
